The New World of Terror

Although this may seem late based on all that occurred in Paris, I’ve been thinking about the issue of terrorism.

What is terrorism?

Oxford Dictionary defines terrorism as “The use of violence and intimidation in the pursuit of political aims”.  Wikipedia says, “In its broadest sense, terrorism is any act designed to cause terror. In a narrower sense, terrorism can be understood to feature a political objective. The word terrorism is politically loaded and emotionally charged”.

On November 13 a coordinated series of attacks in Paris, France resulted in the death of 130 people. Republicans exploded with condemnations of Muslims, condemnation of Syrian refugees and astonishment that a refugee granted asylum in the U.S. could legally buy a gun.

Since that spate of condemnations we have had the terrorist attack on Planned Parenthood in Colorado. We just had the terrorist attack in San Bernardino, California.  And these are home grown terrorists!

We don’t have the raw rage and condemnation when U.S. citizens with intent commit an act of terrorism in the U.S. Let’s be clear, terrorism is terrorism! Skin color, ideology, religion, country of origin have nothing to do with terrorism. Terrorism is an act of violence against anyone by anyone designed to cause terror or accomplish a political objective.

Let’s start our conversations by being honest – most of the terrorism done in the U.S. has been done by U.S. citizens against U.S. citizens. And the wanton disregard allowing access to personal firearms by every Tom, Dick and Harry as if their non-aborted fetuses were born with an absolute right to have a gun to carry and use anywhere and everywhere.

It’s time for the U.S. to grow up maturely. To face the fact that we grow more terrorists who want to harm U.S. citizens; who deny the legitimacy of our government; and who consistently issue threats that they will defend themselves against anyone attempting to control their right to keep and bear arms.

Our Supreme Court has overreached on the rights of gun owners. The NRA is a terrorist organization blackmailing Senators and Congresspersons to keep legislations from controlling access to firearms. And the Republican Party and FOX News are the spin-meisters and propaganda machine of corporate rights, the NRA and anyone else who prefers self-interest to social support.
