Remember the Promise of July 4th
On July 4th, 1776, the second Continental Congress signed the Declaration of Independence at Pennsylvania State House, in Philadelphia (later renamed Independence Hall).
We declared independence from the British monarchical rule. The United States proclaimed itself separate from British rule and on an equal station as other powers of the earth.
It was a bold, courageous declaration that began the American democratic experiment. An experiment designed to serve ‘We the People’.
Today, in the United States, we are in a time of existential crisis.
The Republican Party has embraced an ethic of authoritarian rule that is outlined in Project 2025, Presidential Transition Project (https://www.project2025.org/).
Just as Donald Trump serves as a useful idiot for Vladimir Putin and Russia, he is simply the vile, small-minded, mean, vengeful mouthpiece and useful idiot for the intention of the conservative movement to turn the United States into an authoritarian theocracy.
Am I exaggerating? No. Look at Project 2025, the plan to take over all of the federal government within the first 180 days of attaining the White House. Not just take over in the normal course of business, but the elimination of many federal agencies, and many regulations, especially as they relate to the environment and fossil fuels; putting all educational requirements in the hands of the states; and ensuring schools teach the Bible.
In 1925, Adolf Hitler published Mein Kampf (My Struggle), outlining his political ideology and plans for Germany. No one believed it would happen. It did!
Don’t think this election is about an old guy and a felon. It is about everything symbolized by our July 4th Independence Day history: Freedom and Democracy.
One side, led by Joe Biden, wants to maintain Freedom and Democracy for all Americans, as well as restore rights taken away by the complicit conservative Supreme Court majority.
The other side, following the Project 2025 plan written by the President of the Heritage Foundation, Kevin D. Roberts, PhD, intends to create an authoritarian government with Christianity as the foundational religion that all of us must follow.
Joe Biden surrounds himself with competent, qualified public servants, not power-hungry sycophants. There is only one choice this November election cycle – vote Democratic up and down the ticket. Build a federal coalition that can move our country forward and keep our democracy strong and alive.
Doing anything else, including voting for third-party candidates, supports Project 2025 and the death of the American Dream envisioned by our Founders.
A note by the author: I am not now, nor have I ever been a registered Democrat. This is not about a party. This is about the survival of our democratic Republic. Don’t be an ostrich.
