Daylight Savings Time Hoax
Now that we have passed through another Spring Daylight Savings Time (DST) shift I have to object to the ongoing hoax of the DST myth.
Growing up where you told we needed to shift the time for the farmers? Perhaps you were told we shifted the time to reduce electricity use during World War II and it was so effective we kept it.
The truth is DST does not support the farmers – hell, farmers don’t need to shift hours they get up when they need to milk or plow and breakfast when the sun comes up. Whether that hour is 3 AM or 4 AM on the clock doesn’t matter, they have to do it when it needs to be done. Plus farmers are the only group who opposed DST because it left them less daylight to get crops to market.
As far as energy savings the State of California studied DST at length and determined that there was a .018% potential energy savings. In their 2008 study the National Bureau of Economic Research found that the potential savings in lighting demand were often offset by increased use of air conditioning in the evening – result = no savings.
Plus the shift of airline time schedules are estimated to coast roughly $147 million per shift (Fall or Spring).
The darkness in the morning impacts those with Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD), it disrupts sleep patterns, and the rupturing sleep patterns are linked to increased myocardial infarctions and increased auto accidents.
The question is why do we choose to believe the myth and perpetuate this non-functioning hoax.
